THE COSSACKS 1928 FULL

Frances Marion turns it into a Raphael Sabatini-style historical swashbuckler. The Cossacks is a 1928 American silent drama film produced and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by George Hill and Clarence Brown. Tolstoy’s autobiographic novel (a personal favorite) focuses on a wastrel aristocrat in the army among the Cossacks. The boys in their wooly papakhas add authenticity and counter the pretty boy looks of the leads. And the folks at Industrial Light and Magic still haven’t shown us anything like the crazy, undercranked trick riding sequence by the acrobatic troupe of actual tassel-headed Cossacks on a US tour and hired by MGM as extras. This is one of those silent films with great swarms of activity, crowd-pleasing spectacle that seems more spectacular to 21st century eyes inured to CGI crowd and battle sequences.
